Ingredients

For the Beef Patties

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup plain or seasoned breadcrumbs Seasoned breadcrumbs can add extra flavor.
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can substitute with half-and-half or evaporated milk.
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just incorporated.
  • Form the beef mixture into 6 to 8 oval patties of even size and thickness. Allow them to rest while you prepare the gravy base.

Cooking

  • In a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat, brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden. Remove the patties and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onion until softened.
  • Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, then whisk in beef broth, heavy cream, and garlic powder until smooth.
  • Arrange the browned patties back into the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  • Cover tightly with a lid or foil and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the cover and continue baking for 15 minutes until the gravy is bubbly and thickened.
  • Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and the gravy thicken further.

Notes

Serve family-style directly from the skillet. Pair with mashed potatoes or green beans. Feel free to enhance flavor with fresh herbs like parsley or chives. Store leftovers in an airtight container; they can be refrigerated for 3-4 days or frozen for up to three months.
