Classic French Onion Soup Recipe – A Rich and Savory Winter Favorite
French Onion Soup is a delicious and flavorful dish that is ideal to keep warm in the winter cold. This classic recipe has caramelized onions that are cooked in a delicious soup, served with a slice toasted baguette and melty Gruyere cheese.
Ingredients
- Four large onions thinly cut
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 cups of beef broth
- 2 teaspoons flour that is all-purpose
- 1 leaf of a bay
- 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme (or 1 teaspoon of dried)
- Salt and pepper as desired
- 1 baguette cut in slices
- 2 cups of grated Gruyere cheese
Execution
In a large saucepan heat the butter along with the olive oil on moderate temperature. Add the sugar and onions and cook them slowly with frequent stirring until the onions are completely caramelized (about 30 to 40 minutes).
Incorporate the garlic with flour, and cook for a further minute.
Add the white wine and continue scraping off any brown bits that have accumulated at in the base of the pan. Mix in Bay leaf, beef broth and the thyme. Bring to a boil and cook for 30 mins. Sprinkle with salt and pepper as desired.
Preheat your oven until it is ready to cook. Pour your soup in oven safe bowls. Serve every bowl with slices baguette and a good portion of Gruyere cheese.
Set the bowls on a baking tray and broil until cheese is bubbly and melts. Serve hot.
